Reuben Cohen
Reuben has been with Lurssen Mastering since it opened its doors in 2006. In that time he has risen to the top of the ranks in the craft and is sought after for his diverse insight and clear-headed focus. He came from being a musician and very quickly adapted his keen ear to shaping audio for independent artists, movie soundtracks, major artists, and everything in between.
He was awarded a Latin Grammy in November 2010 for his work on Diego Torres’ album Distinto, and a 2014 TEC Award for his work on the single, Happy, by Pharrell Williams.
He also worked on the soundtrack of the international movie phenomenon Slumdog Millionaire, which won the Grammy for Best Soundtrack in 2010. The soundtrack also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score and two Academy Awards, one for Best Original Music Score, and the other for Best Original Song for Jai Ho. He also mastered Stand Up by Cynthia Erivo, which was nominated for an Academy Award in 2019 for Best Original Song, and also nominated for a Grammy for Best Song for Visual Media in 2020. Reuben has received much credit for his remastering of Metallica’s …And Justice For All, which received a writeup in Billboard Magazine acknowledging his work. He has played an important role in the emerging world of immersive audio by contributing to developing techniques that will help set the standard for best practices in the field. He presented a technique at AES New York in 2019 allowing for all of the traditional mastering techniques of stereo processing in series to be fully utilized in these formats.
In addition to having mastered and fine-tuned the art of balancing audio, Reuben enjoys the beautiful rustic outdoor environment we have in Southern California. He was raised partly in Santa Barbara and partly in Vancouver. He decided long ago to make Southern California his base and enjoys time with his family and his dog. He also enjoys the process of giving back to the community with his work having benefitted charities such as Sound Art, MusiCares, The Recording Academy, and A Place Called Home.
